All about your airbag
Size guide
Size guide
Choose your size
An airbag must sit securely on your torso, follow your movements and retain the space it needs to deploy. Prioritise chest and hip measurements when choosing your size. Height and back length provide additional checks.
The right method
Four checks, in the right order.
Take your measurements over a T-shirt or, at most, a thin jumper. A padded jacket or thick layer distorts your measurements and must never be used as the basis for choosing your airbag size.
Measure your chest and hips first.
Chest and hip circumferences are the measurements to prioritise when using the chart and choosing your size.
Check your height too.
Check that your height in centimetres falls within the stated range. This adds to your chest and hip measurements.
Check your back length.
Back length is an additional check: it helps confirm that the protection extends down correctly without interfering with your position in the saddle. Prioritise chest and hip measurements when using the chart and choosing your size.
Between two sizes, choose the right fit.
If your measurements fall between two sizes, choose the one that stays secure on your torso without compressing you or restricting your movements. Do not size up to allow for a padded jacket. Ask AXION for advice if you are unsure.
Taking your measurements
Keep it simple with a tape measure.
Stand naturally, with your arms relaxed and your gaze straight ahead. The tape should follow your body without digging in or compressing your clothing.
Measurements
The complete chart.
Prioritise chest and hip circumferences when choosing your size in the chart. Height and back length provide additional checks. If your measurements point to different sizes, ask AXION for advice.

Once you are wearing it
Check the fit while moving.
The airbag must sit securely on your torso without compressing you or restricting your movements. Fasten it fully, move your shoulders, lean slightly forwards, then sit down in a position that mirrors how you sit on your horse.
Still unsure?
Send us your three measurements.
Tell us your height, chest circumference and hip circumference. We will help you choose before you order.
User, Care, and Warranty Guide
Use & care
The right steps before and after every ride.
Connecting to the saddle, checks, falls, cleaning, drying and storage: this guide brings together the steps that preserve the operation of your AXION airbag and the durability of its finishes.
The AXION guide
Every step at the right time.
01Fit the strap to the saddle
- Remove the stirrup leathers from their bars.
- Fit the two ends of the attachment strap to the stirrup bars on either side of the saddle.
- Refit the stirrup leathers and check that the strap remains correctly positioned, centred and free from abnormal rubbing.
- When using a new saddle, repeat this entire installation before the first use.
The strap must not be attached to a removable or insufficiently strong part of the saddle. Its installation must always comply with the instructions supplied with your own airbag.
02Adjust the attachment strap and connect
- Put on the airbag and fasten it fully.
- Mount your horse, then clip the lanyard’s snap hook onto the strap loop.
- Adjust the attachment strap at the stirrup bars to retain normal freedom of movement, without constant tension on the airbag lanyard.
- Always disconnect before dismounting.
Adjustment is made on the attachment strap at the stirrup bars, not on the airbag lanyard. Too short a setting can put the lanyard under tension during normal movement; too long a setting can delay activation of the system during separation. Follow the adjustment specified in the AXION instructions.
Before every ride, check the strap, lanyard and snap hook for cuts, fraying, deformation or corrosion. The snap hook must open and close freely.
03Wearing clothing over the airbag
Only cover the airbag with a garment explicitly designed for use with an equestrian airbag vest and allowing the space needed for deployment. A rigid, overly fitted or unsuitable garment can obstruct inflation.
Never add a brooch, needle, pin, stitching, sewn or heat-applied patch, or any hard, sharp or pointed object to the airbag. A puncture or additional strain on the fabric can compromise the integrity of the system.
04After a fall or deployment
- Move to safety and check your own condition first, before attending to the equipment.
- Allow the airbag to deflate naturally. Do not puncture, fold or abruptly compress it.
- Inspect the fabric, seams, fastening, mechanism, key ball, lanyard and strap.
- Remove the spent cartridge: a used cartridge is single-use.
- Rearm only with a cartridge compatible with your own airbag, following both the cartridge replacement guide and the instructions.
Before any rearming, look for tears, open seams, apparent leaks, deformed parts or a damaged mechanism. If deployment was unusual, if the system failed despite the lanyard actually being put under tension, or if you suspect damage even without an obvious mark, do not reuse the airbag before it has been checked.
After a significant fall, a direct impact on the mechanism or several deployments close together, contact AXION if you have the slightest doubt before riding again.
05Cleaning the fabric and crystals
Spot-clean the fabric with a soft, very slightly damp microfibre cloth and, if needed, a small amount of mild soap. The fabric should be cleaned, never soaked.
For the crystals, use a clean or used soft-bristled toothbrush, very slightly dampened. Make small, gentle circular movements. Do not scrape or apply strong pressure: the crystals are heat-bonded rather than sewn so they do not interfere with airbag deployment, and excessive rubbing can weaken the adhesive beneath them and cause them to fall off.
Never wet the mechanism, cartridge or its housing, and do not spray any product directly onto the vest.
If liquid reaches the mechanism or the airbag has been immersed, stop using it immediately until it is completely dry.
Any failure resulting from unsuitable care, immersion or contact between the mechanism and liquid cannot be covered by the warranty. Take particular care and be gentle when maintaining your airbag.
A soft-bristled toothbrush for the crystals and a soft microfibre cloth for the fabric. Minimal water, spot-cleaning, gentle movements and natural air drying.
Machine washing, immersion, tumble dryers, hairdryers, ironing, dry cleaning, bleach, solvents, sponges, stiff brushes or heat sources.
06Drying, storing and transporting
Allow the airbag to dry completely in the open air on a wide hanger, in a dry, ventilated place. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, flames and significant heat sources.
Never leave your airbag in direct sun or in a closed car exposed to heat, particularly in summer. Prolonged high temperatures can damage the materials, cartridge or mechanism.
Only put the airbag away when it is perfectly dry. Hang it upright on a wide hanger or keep it flat without compression. Do not roll it, leave it folded for long periods or place heavy objects on top.
During transport, protect the vest, mechanism and cartridge from impacts, humidity and high temperatures. Before flying, check the airline’s conditions for CO₂ cartridges.
07Checking components over time
Before every ride, briefly inspect the fabric, seams, fastening, saddle strap, lanyard, snap hook, key ball, mechanism and external condition of the cartridge. After a fall, deployment, difficult transport or a long period in storage, repeat this check with greater care.
Replace any part showing cuts, fraying, deformation, corrosion or deterioration. Do not use a cartridge that is rusty, dented, spent or appears to have damaged threads.
Once a year, carry out a thorough visual inspection of the entire system. If the instructions for your own airbag require an additional check or cartridge weighing, follow only the value, tolerance and procedure specified for your model.
08Understanding the limits of protection
An equestrian airbag vest is supplementary personal protective equipment. It helps reduce the consequences of certain impacts when it deploys correctly, but it does not prevent a fall and cannot guarantee the absence of serious or fatal injury.
Its effectiveness depends in particular on the correct size, fit, fastening, saddle installation, adjustment of the attachment strap at the stirrup bars, the condition of every component and compliance with the instructions.
Before mounting
Four checks in less than a minute.
This quick check does not replace the instructions. It helps identify an obvious issue before riding.
-
01Vest
Fastening, fabric and seams are intact, without holes, tears or weakened areas.
-
02Cartridge
The cartridge suited to your airbag is unused, correctly installed and free from visible impact damage, corrosion or deformation.
-
03Mechanism
Housing, key ball, lanyard and snap hook are correctly in place and free from abnormal wear.
-
04Saddle & connection
The attachment strap at the stirrup bars is correctly fitted and adjusted; the lanyard is not under constant tension in a normal riding position.
After deployment
Rearm in the correct order.
The dedicated guide takes you through four steps to inspect the mechanism and fit a suitable new cartridge.
This guide makes the information easier to follow. The instructions, labelling and regulatory documents supplied with your own airbag remain the reference and take precedence in the event of any difference.
Cartridge replacement guide
Cartridge replacement guide
Rearm your airbag in four steps.
After deployment, let the airbag deflate, then follow the four steps in order. None of the steps should require excessive force.
Have the Allen key and screw supplied with your airbag to hand, along with a new cartridge suited to its size. Work on a flat, stable and well-lit surface.
-
1
Inspect the airbag and remove the used cartridge.
Allow the airbag to deflate. On a flat surface, gently press the inflated chambers to release any remaining gas, without folding or rolling the vest. Check the fabric, seams, lanyard and mechanism, then unscrew the spent cartridge. It is single-use and must never be refitted.
-
2
Loosen and realign the mechanism.
Using the Allen key, loosen the lower screw until you can align the striker with the key-ball opening. Keep the key, screw and striker perfectly aligned.
-
3
Reinsert the key ball, then close the mechanism.
Keep the striker aligned, insert the key ball into its housing, then gradually tighten the lower screw fully. Gently pull the lanyard to check that the ball is securely retained.
After the first fallThe first rearming may feel firmer because the mechanism is new. This is normal: apply a little more steady, progressive pressure, without sudden movements or excessive force. If a part becomes misaligned, stop and realign it.
-
4
Fit the new cartridge and check.
Position the cartridge straight and screw it in firmly by hand. Use a 50 cc cartridge for sizes 3XS, 2XS and XS, or a 60 cc cartridge for sizes S to XL, subject to the labelling of your own airbag. Finally, check that the ball is retained, the lower screw is fully closed and the lanyard exits the vest freely.

How it works
Mechanical. Nothing to charge.
The lanyard connects the airbag to the saddle. When sufficient separation occurs, the key ball is extracted, the cartridge releases gas and the cushion deploys. No electronic component is involved.
- Activation
- Mechanical, through separation between the rider and the saddle.
- Energy
- CO₂ cartridge, without a battery, app or subscription.
- After activation
- The single-use cartridge is replaced and the mechanism rearmed according to the instructions.
- Before mounting
