Equestrian airbag vest wet from rain: when can you wear it again?

A shower catches you during your lesson, and the vest is damp when you return to the stables. Can you wear it again for your next ride? The answer depends on the area affected: surface moisture on the fabric is not checked in the same way as a mechanism or cartridge exposed to water. For an AXION equestrian airbag vest, the instructions supplied with your model remain the reference.

Can you wear a waterproof jacket over the airbag in the rain?

Not a waterproof jacket chosen simply because it feels roomy. The AXION user guide requires any garment worn over the vest to be explicitly designed to allow an equestrian airbag vest to deploy. A rigid or minimally stretchy fabric can interfere with inflation even if it protects against rain. We explain this point in the article about jackets and padded jackets compatible with an airbag.

If the rain becomes heavy and you do not have a compatible garment, make your way calmly back to shelter. Do not assume that the vest’s external appearance means that its mechanism is waterproof.

After your ride: check where the water reached

Disconnect the snap hook before dismounting, then remove the vest in a dry place. Inspect the fabric, seams and fastening, as well as the mechanism area, cartridge housing, lanyard and snap hook. A cartridge that is corroded, dented or appears to have damaged threading must not be used.

If only the surface fabric is damp, allow it to dry without compressing the vest. If water reached the mechanism or cartridge housing, stop using the airbag until it has dried completely. Immersion or unusual exposure to moisture calls for extra caution: contact AXION before wearing it again if you cannot rule out damage to the system.

How can you dry it without damaging it?

Hang the airbag on a wide hanger in a dry, ventilated place. Allow it to dry naturally, without a hair dryer, radiator, tumble dryer or direct sunlight. Do not put it away damp in a cover or leave it in a car boot. To remove a mud mark after your ride, use only a very slightly damp microfibre cloth and, if necessary, a little mild soap on the fabric: never spray water onto the mechanism.

The practical cleaning and storage guide explains routine care in detail.

When can you ride again?

  • Surface fabric is damp: wait until it is completely dry, then carry out the usual checks before your ride. Make sure no seam, fastening or system component shows any abnormality.
  • Mechanism or cartridge is wet: do not use the vest while either remains damp. Once dry, if there are signs of corrosion, unusual operation or any lingering doubt, ask AXION to check it before riding.
  • Immersion, impact or visible damage: set the vest aside and contact AXION before putting it back into service.

There is no universal timeframe such as “24 hours is enough”. Drying time depends on what became wet and the ventilation conditions. Just before riding again, check the fastening, the correct cartridge for your model, the mechanism, the lanyard and the saddle strap. The strap attachment on the saddle must also be checked, especially if you change saddles.

The AXION PURE equestrian airbag vest product page presents its mechanical system and supplied accessories. Whatever your model, consult its instructions and the AXION guide before using it again after heavy rain. An airbag supplements a rider’s protection: it does not prevent a fall or guarantee freedom from injury.
