Equestrian airbag: is it really useful in a fall?

Is an equestrian airbag vest useful if you can still fall? Yes, provided you understand what it protects, how it is triggered and when it may not work. The vest adds inflatable protection around certain areas of the torso; it does not eliminate either the fall or the risk of injury.

What happens when it is triggered

On a mechanical model such as AXION, a tether connects the vest to a saddle strap. When the rider separates far enough from the saddle, the pull activates the mechanism. A CO₂ cartridge inflates the cushions. This sequence works only if the vest is fastened, fitted with a compatible cartridge, correctly connected and in good condition.

The AXION technical data sheet states an inflation time of under 100 ms and coverage from the cervical area to the pelvis and sacrum, depending on the vest’s design. This stated time does not mean every impact is avoided: the nature of the fall and the timing of deployment matter.

Why wear one for flatwork, hacking or jumping?

A fall can happen in many disciplines. A spook, loss of balance, refusal or slip may occur outside a jumping event. Wearing your airbag regularly creates the same routine before every ride: check the vest, cartridge and tether, then connect once mounted.

Your decision also depends on the saddle and whether the intended strap can be fitted. At a riding school, speak to the instructor before the lesson. What are the limits of a mechanical airbag?

• There must be enough separation between rider and saddle to pull the tether. An impact without separation may occur before the system deploys.
• A vest that is not connected, incorrectly fastened, damaged or fitted with the wrong cartridge cannot provide the expected performance.
• Protection depends on the areas actually covered; it does not automatically include the head, limbs or every impact scenario.
• An airbag replaces neither a helmet nor, where regulations require one, a body protector meeting the specified level.

A good fit changes how it works

The vest should follow the body without compressing it, remain fastened and allow normal movement in the saddle. A size that is too large may move; an outer garment that is too close-fitting may restrict inflation. Use the measurements in the AXION size chart and check the compatibility of any jacket worn over it.

Can the airbag be reused after a fall?

A discharged cartridge is single-use, but replacing it is only one step. First check your own condition, then inspect the fabric, seams, mechanism and attachments. If damage is possible or deployment seemed unusual, stop using the vest and have it checked.

So, who can benefit from an airbag?

Any rider whose body shape and discipline allow the vest to be used in accordance with its instructions, whether beginner or experienced.
