Why an equestrian airbag vest may not deploy during a fall

A fall happened, but the airbag did not inflate. The first reaction is often to conclude that it “didn’t work”. Sometimes that is true. But a mechanical system does not deploy simply because it detects imbalance: several conditions must be met between saddle, tether, mechanism and cartridge.
Understanding those conditions helps prevent user errors without ever trivialising a non-deployment.
1. The rider was not connected to the saddle
A mechanical airbag contains no battery or fall sensor. It needs the tension transmitted through its tether. If the snap hook is not connected to the saddle strap, the vest cannot deploy.
2. The saddle strap was attached in the wrong place
The strap must be installed according to the instructions, on the designated anchoring points. On an AXION airbag, it attaches to the stirrup bars to create a central attachment point near the pommel.
3. The tether was much too long
If the tether is excessively long, the rider can move away from the saddle without immediately reaching the tension needed for deployment. A tether that is too short can, conversely, restrict normal movement or cause an unintended deployment. Adjustment must be made in the saddle according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
4. The fall did not create enough separation
A mechanical airbag deploys through tension. Some falls involve a slow slide, remaining very close to the saddle or an impact before enough separation occurs. This is a limitation of a system based on mechanical separation.
5. The cartridge was missing, spent or unsuitable
A spent cartridge cannot inflate the vest again. A poorly fitted, damaged, corroded or unauthorised cartridge can also prevent the system from operating under the intended conditions.
Before every ride, check that the cartridge is new, intact, correctly installed and authorised for the model and size. On AXION, sizes 3XS to XS use a stated 50 cc capacity and sizes S to XL 60 cc. Capacity alone does not prove compatibility.
6. The mechanism was reset incorrectly
After deployment, fitting a new cartridge is not enough. The piston, ball and cap must be repositioned exactly. If anything feels abnormal during resetting, stop the procedure.
7. The vest or tether was damaged
A previous fall, abrasion, prolonged compression or poor storage can affect fabric, tether, strap or mechanism. Some damage is visible; other damage requires professional inspection.
8. A garment restricted deployment
An incompatible coat, show jacket or padded jacket can restrain the inflatable chambers. The airbag should remain the outermost layer unless worn beneath a garment explicitly compatible with it.
What should you do after a non-deployment?
- Take care of the rider first and seek medical advice if necessary.
- Photograph the vest, cartridge, mechanism, tether and saddle strap.
- Record the date, circumstances, type of fall and adjustment used.
- Keep the cartridge and accessories in place if this creates no danger.
- Contact the manufacturer or after-sales service before using the vest again.
What an airbag cannot do
An airbag does not prevent falls, does not protect the head and cannot guarantee the absence of injury. A mechanical model also does not protect against a blow received on foot unless it deploys.

Before riding: vest fastened, authorised cartridge intact, mechanism without anomaly, saddle strap correctly fitted, tether adjusted and snap hook connected once in the saddle.
