Detail of the mechanical system and cartridge of an AXION Equestrian equestrian airbag vest

Mechanical or electronic airbag vest: what changes for horse riding?

When comparing equestrian airbag vests, one difference quickly stands out: some deploy through a mechanical connection to the saddle, while others use an electronic system. The two approaches are not used in exactly the same way.

The aim is not to declare one technology “better” in absolute terms, but to understand what each means in everyday use.

How does a mechanical airbag vest work?

A mechanical airbag vest is connected to the saddle by an attachment system specified by the manufacturer. When the rider separates sufficiently from the horse, the pull on this system triggers the mechanism and releases the gas from the cartridge.

This solution has an immediately understandable advantage: there is no battery to charge or algorithm to configure. However, riders must remember to attach themselves before setting off and disconnect before dismounting normally.

Deployment while dismounting can happen if you forget to disconnect. If this happens to you, our article explains what to do after accidental deployment.

How does an electronic airbag vest work?

An electronic system relies on sensors and an onboard device that analyse movement according to the manufacturer’s intended logic. Depending on the model, use may require a charged battery, switching the system on, an app or other specific checks.

Its practical benefit is that there is no mechanical tether to attach to the saddle. In return, riders need to include electronic system management in their routine: charging, system status and product-specific instructions.

The real difference: your pre-ride routine

With a mechanical system, the routine is physical: check the attachment and connect. With an electronic system, it focuses more on the device’s status: charge, activation and any operating indicators.

In both cases, an airbag vest used without following the manufacturer’s instructions loses its purpose. Simplicity is therefore not just a product feature: it is also about which technology you are most likely to use correctly at every ride.

What if you ride several horses?

For professional riders, coaches or owners who often change horses, this is a very practical question. A mechanical system requires every saddle used to have the correct attachment. An electronic system avoids this connection but comes with its own checks.

If you use a mechanical airbag vest, do not simply clip the tether to an improvised point. The attachment must be installed according to the instructions. We explain this in our guide to correctly attaching an airbag vest to the saddle.

Maintenance and resetting

A mechanical airbag vest uses a cartridge compatible with its model and size. After deployment, resetting must follow the manufacturer’s procedure. An electronic system may also require consumables or a specific procedure, depending on the model.

In both cases, before buying, check consumable availability, how easily the vest can be returned to service and when the manufacturer recommends an inspection.

Which system should you choose?

Choose a mechanical airbag vest if you value straightforward operation without a battery and do not mind attaching yourself to the saddle. Consider an electronic system if having no tether is a priority and managing an electronic device fits naturally into your habits.

The AXION system is mechanical. It is designed to work with a saddle connection and cartridges suited to each size range. You can consult its full technical specifications.

The key takeaway

Mechanical versus electronic is not a contrast between old and modern. They are two approaches to use. Compare them according to your riding, your discipline, how many horses you ride and, above all, the routine you will actually follow, ride after ride.
