AXION Equestrian ORIGIN equestrian airbag vest with crystals

How to choose an equestrian airbag vest in 2026

Choosing an equestrian airbag vest should not begin with a colour, a price or a brand name. An airbag is first and foremost protective equipment: it must suit your body shape, your riding and the way you actually use it.

Between mechanical and electronic systems, differences in weight, sizing, cartridges and compatibility with a competition jacket, it is easy to feel lost. These are the criteria that allow you to compare models usefully in 2026.

1. Begin with compliance and protection information

Before buying, check that the manufacturer provides clear, identifiable and consistent regulatory information about the product. A serious technical sheet should explain what was assessed, which model is concerned and the conditions under which it may be used.

At AXION, model CH03-C is category II CE-marked PPE, subject to EU type-examination (Module B), with the certificate issued by Aliénor Certification, notified body no. 2754, based on the NF S72-800:2022 technical reference and expert opinion.

The right instinct is not to look for the greatest number of logos. Look for information that is precise, traceable and understandable.

2. The right size is non-negotiable

An airbag vest that is too large may move excessively; one that is too tight may restrict movement or fail to leave the space intended by the manufacturer. Choose your size from the guide for the model concerned, not simply from your usual jacket size.

Measure yourself in the clothes you normally wear to ride and consult the AXION size guide. If you are between two sizes, follow the measurements and product-specific recommendations rather than your usual clothing habits.

3. Look at the deployment system

Equestrian airbags can use different technologies. A mechanical system is connected to the saddle by a cord; an electronic system relies on sensors and onboard electronics. Neither should be chosen solely because it appears more modern or simpler.

Ask instead: do I want to manage a battery? Do I ride several horses? Do I want a self-contained system that does not need charging? How is it reset after deployment?

4. Weight and freedom of movement matter every day

An airbag vest can look technically reassuring on paper and still end up in a locker if it is uncomfortable. The best equipment is also the equipment you are willing to wear ride after ride.

Consider the weight in your size, flexibility, mesh zones, the cut around the shoulders and how it feels in the saddle. As a reference, the AXION airbag vest weighs approximately 600 g in size S.

5. Check compatibility with your competition clothing

An airbag is not worn in the same way with every garment. Some competition jackets are designed to be worn over an airbag; others are not. Follow both the airbag instructions and the jacket instructions.

6. Check resetting and cartridges

After deployment, you need to know how to return the vest to service and which cartridge to use. A cartridge is not interchangeable simply because its volume looks similar. The compatible reference depends on the model and size.

At AXION, sizes XXXS to XS use 50 cc cartridges, while sizes S to XL use 60 cc cartridges. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

7. Think about the riding you actually do

Competition, hacking, flatwork, a young horse or several mounts: your riding affects the comfort and simplicity you need. A rider who rides five horses a day will not necessarily have the same priorities as a leisure rider who rides twice a week.

8. Finally, choose an airbag vest you will want to wear

Safety does not rule out style. Once the technical criteria and fit are validated, aesthetics can legitimately form part of the choice. Equipment that appears in almost every photograph and is worn over your clothes can also become part of your identity as a rider.

That is precisely the idea behind AXION: one shared technical base, with a choice between understated lines and more expressive creations, including models adorned with Swarovski crystals applied by hand in France.

In summary

To choose an equestrian airbag vest in 2026, compare compliance, fit, deployment system, weight, clothing compatibility and resetting first. Price and design come afterwards.
