Equestrian airbag vests for women: how to choose the right fit

Do you need an equestrian airbag vest specifically labelled “women’s”? Not necessarily. For protective equipment, body shape and measurements matter more than a marketing label.

However, bust, torso length, shoulder width, height and riding clothes can strongly influence comfort. Here is how to choose a suitable airbag vest when looking for a comfortable fit on a female body shape.

Start with your measurements, not your clothing size

A 36, an S or an M does not mean the same thing across brands. For an airbag vest, take the measurements requested by the manufacturer and compare them with the chart for that model.

Ideally, measure yourself over a layer similar to what you wear when riding. If you use a competition jacket, also consider how the airbag vest must be worn with it.

The AXION size guide details the ranges for each size.

A fuller bust does not necessarily mean sizing up

Choosing a larger size “to make sure there is room” is not always the right instinct. An excessively loose airbag vest may not stay in place as well. Conversely, a size that is too tight may restrict you and fail to provide the space required for the product to function.

The right approach is to compare all your measurements and, if in doubt, ask for advice using those measurements rather than choosing at random.

Look at back length

For shorter female riders, length is often as important as bust measurement. A vest that is too long may touch the saddle or ride up, depending on your position.

For taller female riders, the opposite challenge applies: maintaining suitable coverage without choosing a size that is too wide simply to gain length.

Test shoulder freedom

In the saddle, your arms and shoulders must remain free. Try a few simple movements: raise your arms, take a jumping position, lean forwards and turn your torso. The vest should move with you without making you feel confined.

Airbag vest and competition jacket: consider the whole outfit

Clothing can feel perfectly comfortable separately and become too restrictive when layered. Follow the instructions from both the airbag vest and jacket manufacturers.

Weight is particularly noticeable on smaller frames

A heavy or rigid airbag vest may feel more noticeable on a lighter female rider. That does not mean sacrificing fit to achieve the lowest weight, but that a good balance between lightness and cut is worth comparing.

The AXION airbag vest weighs approximately 600 g in size S and is available from XXXS to XL.

What about design?

Once the technical criteria and size are right, there is no reason to dismiss aesthetics as trivial. An airbag vest is worn over or visually integrated into a competition outfit; it can remain discreet or become a distinctive signature.

AXION offers understated models such as ORIGIN and designs adorned with Swarovski crystals applied by hand in France. Personalisation also allows you to go further in certain permitted areas.

A “women’s” airbag vest should, above all, fit you

You do not necessarily need a pink, fitted or female-labelled product. Look for an airbag vest that is correctly sized, comfortable for your body shape, compatible with your clothing and whose operation you understand.
