Equestrian airbag vest for beginners: when and how to get equipped
Partager
Do you need to wait until you start jumping or competing before wearing an equestrian airbag vest? No. A fall can happen during a flatwork lesson or a hack. For a beginner, the better question is whether the vest suits their body shape and can be used correctly during each riding session.
A mechanical airbag does not replace a helmet, proper instruction or safe riding practices. It adds inflatable protection when sufficient separation from the saddle activates the system.
Start with the riding context
If you ride at a riding school, ask your instructor how to install the designated saddle strap on the saddle you use and how to connect once mounted. Depending on how lessons and equipment are organised, the saddle may need to be prepared before bringing the horse in. Do not attach the tether to the first available ring.
With your own horse, you can leave the strap correctly fitted to your saddle and check its condition before every session. In both cases, the routine should remain simple and repeatable: vest fastened, correct cartridge fitted, mechanism in working order, connection made when mounted, and disconnection before dismounting.
Size matters more than experience
An equestrian airbag vest that is too loose can move around; one that is too tight can restrict movement and deployment. Try it on over the clothes you will actually wear while riding, both seated and in a forward position. Check the back, shoulders, fastening and range of arm movement.
For AXION models, the technical data sheet specifies a minimum height of 1,35 m and a minimum weight of 35 kg, with sizes ranging from 3XS to XL. Simply meeting these thresholds does not automatically guarantee the right fit: body measurements and a proper fitting remain essential. Read the AXION size guide before buying.
Understand the mechanical trigger
The AXION vest is connected by a tether to a strap fitted to the saddle. When the rider moves far enough away from the saddle, the tension activates the mechanism and the COâ cartridge inflates the cushions. A horse shying will therefore not necessarily trigger the airbag, and an impact without sufficient separation can occur before inflation.
Ask someone to explain the difference between the saddle strap and the connecting tether. Adjust the length according to the instructions while in your usual riding position, without knots or improvised extensions. Our article on how to attach your equestrian airbag vest correctly to the saddle explains every step.
Five questions to ask before buying
- Does the model suit your body shape? Ask for advice based on your measurements, not just your usual clothing size.
- Can you use it with your saddle? Check the attachment point specified in the instructions and your yardâs procedures.
- Which cartridge should you buy? The correct type depends on the modelâs size and mechanism. The AXION cartridge is sold separately.
- How do you reset it? Keep the instructions, the specified tools and a compatible cartridge if you want to be able to continue riding after a deployment that caused no damage.
- Which jacket will you wear? If it covers the airbag, it must be explicitly compatible and leave enough room for inflation.
Beginner children: additional care
For a child, neither age nor experience alone is enough to decide. Height, weight, actual fit and the ability to follow the connection routine all matter. An adult must check both connection and disconnection. Our guide to equestrian airbag vests for children: age, height and minimum weight explains the specific criteria.
A sensible first purchase
Start by determining the right size and how you intend to use it. All AXION creations share the same technical base; models differ in their design and finish. The PURE model is an understated option, while the full collection lets you compare styles. Remember to add the cartridge recommended for your size.
Wearing the vest consistently and fitting it correctly is more useful than buying one and leaving it in its cover. If you are still unsure about the principle of this equipment, read what an equestrian airbag vest can genuinely offer in a fall.
