Equestrian airbag vest for children: when is it genuinely suitable?
Partager
“At what age can my child wear an airbag?” It is a common question, but age is not the best reference point. Two ten-year-olds can have very different height, weight and torso length.
An airbag should be chosen according to the limits set for the model and then fitted to the child’s actual body shape. The young rider must also understand the saddle connection and should not handle the mechanism alone.
Why age is not enough
The operation of a mechanical airbag depends on factors such as chamber size, cartridge, cut and deployment force. These relate to the system and the rider’s morphology, not a date of birth.
An age shown in a commercial chart should never replace the minimum height and weight stated on the label and in the instructions.
What are the limits for an AXION airbag?
AXION Equestrian airbags can be used by a young rider only if they are at least 1.35 m tall and weigh at least 35 kg.
Smaller sizes are 3XS, 2XS and XS and use an authorised cartridge with a stated capacity of 50 cc. Final size choice must follow the size guide and actual fit.
If the child is below either threshold, the AXION airbag is not suitable even if the vest can physically be fastened.
Can you buy a larger size so it lasts longer?
No. Protective equipment is not a winter coat bought with two years of growing room.
An airbag that is too long can touch the saddle, rise towards the neck or position protective zones incorrectly. A model that is too wide can also move around the torso.
The size must fit today. Measurements should be checked again after a growth spurt.
How do you check fit on a child?
Fully fasten the vest over the usual riding clothes and check that the collar does not interfere with the helmet, the bottom does not touch the saddle, shoulders remain free, the child can breathe deeply, the vest does not rotate around the torso and the mechanism does not press painfully on the ribs.
Carry out the fitting in the saddle with stirrups at the correct length. The child should be able to adopt a two-point position and lean forward without restriction.
Should the child be able to connect alone?
They should understand the rule, but an adult should check it.
The routine should be taught early: mount, settle in the saddle, connect the snap hook with adult help or supervision, and disconnect before dismounting.
An instructor, parent or responsible adult should check vest fastening, cartridge, saddle strap and tether. A child should not reset the mechanism alone after deployment.
Does the strap work on a pony saddle?
It must be installed on a saddle with the anchoring points specified in the instructions. On AXION, the strap attaches to the stirrup bars.
The tether length must then be adjusted for the pony, saddle and child’s position. A setting taken from an adult saddle should not simply be reused.
Is an airbag mandatory for a child?
Not as a general rule for every riding session. Requirements depend on the discipline, competition rules and sometimes the riding centre’s own rules.
Some events require a body protector meeting a specified standard. A conventional mechanical airbag does not automatically replace that protection.
Airbag or rigid body protector?
The two systems do not work in the same way. A rigid body protector provides inherent protection, while a mechanical airbag must be connected to the saddle and deployed by sufficient separation.
Depending on the discipline, they may be alternated or combined if the equipment and rules permit it.
Maturity matters as much as morphology
A child may meet the physical thresholds while still needing frequent reminders about the protocol. The airbag remains a complement to supervision, a correctly fitted helmet, suitable tack and progressive instruction.
Use the AXION size guide to check measurements. If the child is under 1.35 m or 35 kg, choose another suitable form of protection with professional guidance.
