CE labels and certification references on an AXION Equestrian airbag vest

CE marking and NF S72-800:2022: how to check an equestrian airbag vest

Two letters, a standard number and a great deal of confusion.

On a product page, “CE” and “NF S72-800:2022” may look like a complete answer. Yet they do not mean the same thing. With personal protective equipment, a marketing sentence should never replace the regulatory documents for the model concerned.

Here is how to read this information without jargon — and, above all, how to verify it before buying.

CE marking: a regulatory requirement, not a quality award

An airbag vest designed to protect a rider is personal protective equipment. To be placed on the market in the European Union, it must comply with the applicable PPE Regulation and bear the CE marking.

CE is a regulatory conformity marking. It is neither a commercial award nor a promise that no injury can occur.

For Category II PPE, the model is notably subject to EU type examination by a competent notified body. The manufacturer then prepares the required regulatory documents and affixes the CE marking in accordance with the Regulation.

NF S72-800:2022: a technical standard specifically for equestrian airbags

NF S72-800:2022 is a French standard for protective garments for equestrian activities fitted with inflatable cushions.

It defines requirements and test methods adapted to riding, including the behaviour of the inflatable system, protected areas, ergonomics, certain mechanical performances and information provided to the user.

One point must be very clear: the letters “NF” form part of the reference of this standard. On their own, they do not mean that the product carries a separate NF certification mark or that it has been certified by the organisation that publishes French standards.

Does “assessed to the standard” mean “NF certified”?

No.

A product can be assessed against the requirements of NF S72-800:2022 as part of its European conformity procedure without holding a separate NF brand certification.

The useful question is therefore not simply “is it NF?”, but rather: which body carried out the EU type examination, against which technical reference, and what document proves it?

Who verifies the CE conformity of a Category II airbag?

For the PPE concerned, EU type examination is carried out by a notified body within the scope for which it is authorised. The body examines the model and verifies the elements required by the regulatory procedure.

For AXION Equestrian, the EU type examination of the relevant model was carried out by ALIÉNOR Certification, notified body no. 2754, under Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and using NF S72-800:2022 as the technical reference.

Which documents should you request before buying?

Before relying on a logo or an advertising statement, check the elements that link the information to the exact model:

  • the EU declaration of conformity;
  • the references of the EU type-examination certificate;
  • the name and number of the notified body;
  • consistency between the model, size and references shown on the label;
  • the instructions for use in the required language;
  • the contact details of the manufacturer or responsible economic operator.

A screenshot with no reference, a document issued for another model or a statement that cannot be linked to the product is not sufficient.

Where should you look on the vest?

Start with the internal label and the area near the mechanism. The information should remain legible and consistent with the packaging, instructions and product documents.

Check in particular:

  1. the exact model name or reference;
  2. the vest size;
  3. the CE marking;
  4. the stated standard references;
  5. available traceability information;
  6. warnings and the authorised cartridge reference.

For a second-hand purchase, a cut, illegible or missing label should be treated as a warning sign. Without traceability, it becomes difficult to confirm the identity of the product and the conditions that apply to it.

Does regulatory conformity guarantee that no injury will occur?

No. No protective equipment can guarantee an injury-free outcome in every fall.

Testing verifies a model under defined conditions. Real-world effectiveness also depends on correct sizing, fit, installation on the saddle, equipment condition, cartridge and the way the fall occurs.

A compliant vest that is too large, incorrectly fastened or fitted with an unsuitable cartridge is not being used under the intended conditions.

What about an airbag worn beneath a jacket?

The airbag’s conformity does not automatically make every jacket compatible. A garment worn over it must leave the volume required for deployment and comply with the conditions specified for the model.

For AXION, a jacket worn over the airbag must contain at least 15% elastane and leave sufficient room, but that percentage is never a universal authorisation. Cut, size and construction also matter. If in doubt, the airbag remains the outermost layer.

What AXION can document

AXION Equestrian airbags bear the CE marking. EU type examination of the relevant model was carried out by ALIÉNOR Certification, notified body no. 2754, under Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and using NF S72-800:2022 as the technical reference. Their stated inflation time is under 100 ms.

This information does not replace the instructions for use. It places them within a precise, verifiable and traceable framework.

The right question to ask before buying

Do not simply ask: “Does it meet the standards?” The wording is too vague.

Ask instead: “Can you provide the EU declaration of conformity and the references of the EU type-examination certificate that correspond exactly to this model?” A serious brand should be able to answer clearly.
